How to create an online store in Colombia: step by step

Platform, local payments, logistics and catalog SEO: the four decisions that determine whether it sells.

Building an online store takes a weekend with any free builder. Making it sell is another problem. Most launch without resolving how they will collect payments reliably, how they will ship, and how they will show up on Google. Six months later they are online and empty.

How do you create an online store in Colombia, step by step?

Four decisions before the first product goes up. Skipping one means redoing work.

Order matters: platform, payments, logistics, catalog SEO. Choosing a platform without knowing how you will collect money, or uploading 200 products before defining the category structure, is work you will repeat in full later.

Each of the next four sections settles one decision. At the end there is a checklist to run before opening.

Which platform should you choose for an online store?

The one that can carry the catalog you will have in two years, not today's.

Not every store needs the same kind of platform. The right question is not which is best, but how much the catalog will grow and how critical performance is to your conversions.

What payment methods does an online store in Colombia need?

More than one. Every missing method is a buyer who cannot pay you.

Launching with a single payment method — usually credit card — leaves out a large slice of the local market. PSE remains the reference method for Colombian buyers, and in several categories and regions cash on delivery still carries weight.

The most used local gateways for cards are Wompi, ePayco and PayU, and all of them can coexist with PSE in the same checkout. Each extra method removes a different barrier: it is coverage, not redundancy.

Payments and fulfillment are settled before opening: they are the parts the customer judges after buying.

How do you plan shipping logistics before you sell?

The post-purchase experience decides the second order. And it is defined before the first.

Decide which carriers you will work with and what delivery times you can actually promise per city — promising two days and delivering in six costs more than charging for shipping. Show shipping costs before checkout: costs that appear at the end are one of the most cited causes of cart abandonment.

And publish your returns and exchange policy before launching, not when the first complaint arrives. Writing it under pressure always turns out worse.

It is the most skipped step and the one that costs the most free traffic.

Every product needs its own description. Copying the supplier's means competing with content identical to every other distributor's, and that content does not rank. Categories need a clear hierarchy and clean URLs so Google can read how the catalog is organized.

Product images need descriptive file names and alt text, and controlled weight: a catalog with dozens of unoptimized photos is among the slowest pages on a site, and there speed hits ranking and conversion at the same time.

What should you check before launching the store?

Eight points. Miss the measurement one and you will not know what to fix later.

A final review before opening to the public:

  • Platform chosen for the catalog projected two years out, not the current one.
  • At least two payment methods that matter in the Colombian market.
  • Shipping costs and times visible before checkout, not after.
  • Returns and exchange policy published and easy to find.
  • Product descriptions written in-house, not copied from the supplier.
  • Images optimized for weight, with descriptive file names and alt text.
  • Active SSL certificate: without it there is no trustworthy payment and no visible trust.
  • Conversion tracking configured from launch day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build an online store in Colombia?

The typical range runs from $4,000,000 to over $12,000,000 COP, depending on the platform, the number of products and the payment, logistics and CRM integrations required.

How long does it take to launch a working store?

An ecommerce site with a mid-sized catalog, payments and basic integrations usually takes six to ten weeks from project start to public launch.

Do I need a registered company to sell online?

To operate legally and issue invoices, yes, commercial registration is required. It is worth resolving before or alongside development, not once orders are waiting.

Which payment gateway is best for Colombia?

There is no single best one. The recommendation is to combine PSE with cards — through Wompi, ePayco or PayU — and evaluate cash on delivery by category and destination city.

Can I migrate to another platform later without losing rankings?

Yes, if the migration is planned with 301 redirects and the URL structure is preserved. Doing it without a plan is the fastest way to lose accumulated traffic.

Summary: what to remember

  • Four decisions before the first product: platform, payments, logistics and catalog SEO.
  • Offering a single payment method shrinks the market you can sell to.
  • Supplier-copied descriptions do not rank: the catalog has to be written.
