Email Marketing for Online Stores: 5 Flows That Sell

Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back: the five automated flows every store needs, with performance data.

Most stores treat email marketing like a megaphone: a weekly offers newsletter blasted to the whole list. What actually sells looks nothing like that. It's five automated emails that fire on their own when a customer does something in your store, set up once and working all year.

Why does email still outsell social media in ecommerce?

Because you own the list, the message lands when the customer acts and every sale can be traced.

Because it's the only digital channel you fully control. On social media, the algorithm decides how many followers see each post, and it can change the rules tomorrow. Your email list belongs to you: nobody charges you to reach it or throttles your reach.

The second reason is timing. A post lands when the network decides; an automated email lands right after the customer did something: signed up, left a cart, received an order or stopped buying. That context is why an abandoned cart email converts far better than a generic ad.

And it's measurable order by order. A tool connected to your store knows which email the customer opened before buying, so you can see what each flow earns. It pays off most with products people buy again and again, such as coffee, cosmetics, supplements or pet food, where the second and third orders are worth more than the first.

For repeat-purchase products like coffee, email takes care of the second order.

What are the 5 automated flows every store needs?

Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back. In that order of priority.

Here are the five, with the trigger, typical send timing and goal of each. The performance figures are averages from Klaviyo's 2026 reports, which cover more than 110,000 brands on its platform; treat them as a reference, not a promise. Klaviyo doesn't publish an average for replenishment flows.

If you can only start with one, start with abandoned cart: it earns the most revenue per email sent. Then welcome, because that's when a subscriber is most interested.

Klaviyo, Mailchimp or n8n: which tool should you use?

Klaviyo if email is a core channel, Mailchimp to start cheap, n8n when you need to connect your own systems.

It depends on how much email drives your sales and how custom your store is. All three connect to WooCommerce: Klaviyo and Mailchimp have official plugins in the WordPress directory, and n8n has a native WooCommerce trigger. Here's the practical difference:

  • Klaviyo: built for ecommerce, with segmentation by purchase history and ready-made flows. Its free plan covers up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month; beyond that you move to a paid plan, which you can price with the estimator on its site. It's the most complete option for ecommerce.
  • Mailchimp: the best known and the easiest to start with. Its free plan allows 250 contacts and 500 emails a month but doesn't include automation flows; for those you need at least the Essentials plan. A good fit for stores just starting out.
  • n8n: not an email tool but an automation orchestrator. It's useful when you need rules the platforms don't offer, such as matching orders against your ERP, sending a WhatsApp alert or emailing through your own sending provider. It takes more technical work, but it doesn't lock you into a platform.
  • Shopify's and WooCommerce's built-in emails: the transactional messages they already send (confirmation, shipping) are enough to begin with, but they don't segment or run replenishment flows.

How do you build the list without buying databases?

With explicit consent and a concrete reason to subscribe. A bought list is illegal in Colombia and doesn't sell anyway.

By asking for the email in exchange for something useful, with clear consent. In Colombia, Law 1581 of 2012 requires the data subject's prior, informed authorisation to process personal data, obtained in a way that can be checked later. A purchased database doesn't meet that bar, and it fills your list with people who never asked to hear from you, which sinks your sender reputation.

The sources that work for a store are simple: checkout (with a subscription box that isn't pre-ticked), a form with a concrete reason to sign up, such as free shipping on the first order or a useful guide, and account creation. Keep your data policy visible and an unsubscribe link in every email.

Black Friday and December are the best weeks of the year to grow the list, because new traffic arrives that may not buy that day. If the form and the welcome flow are ready beforehand, those visitors become customers in January.

What open and conversion rates are normal?

Watch clicks and revenue per recipient. Open rate is no longer reliable.

For campaigns, Mailchimp's ecommerce data shows an average 29.81% open rate and 1.74% click rate, based on figures last updated in December 2023. Automated flows do much better: in Klaviyo's 2026 data, abandoned cart emails average a 6.0% click rate, and the top 10% of brands reach 11.3%.

Take open rates with a pinch of salt. Some email clients load images automatically to protect user privacy, which records opens that never happened. That's why the metrics that matter for a store are clicks, flow conversion rate and revenue per recipient, which ties the email directly to the sale.

Benchmark against yourself, not the industry average. If your abandoned cart flow earns a certain revenue per recipient today, the goal is to improve it by changing the subject line, send timing or offer, one at a time, and measuring. And keep an eye on unsubscribes and spam complaints: if they climb, you're sending too much or to the wrong people.

How do you connect email with your store and your CRM?

The store sends the events, the email tool decides what to send and the CRM keeps the customer's full history.

With an integration that sends store events to your email tool: subscription, product viewed, cart, order paid and order delivered. The official Klaviyo and Mailchimp plugins for WooCommerce do much of this work; on Shopify they connect through its app store. Without those events, the flows have nothing to trigger on.

If you also run a CRM, decide which system owns each piece of data. Usually the store is the source of orders, the CRM is the source of the relationship (calls, quotes, support tickets) and the email tool reads from both. When all three hold different versions of the same customer, you end up sending welcome emails to people who bought two years ago.

A common mistake is duplicate emails: the store sends its order confirmation and the email tool sends another. Switch off whatever overlaps and test each flow with a real order before activating it. If your case needs rules no platform offers, such as replenishment based on exact pack size or WhatsApp alerts, that's where a custom n8n automation makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

Does Klaviyo work with WooCommerce?

Yes. Klaviyo has an official plugin in the WordPress directory that syncs WooCommerce orders, products and carts, which powers its abandoned cart and post-purchase flows.

How many emails a week is too many?

There's no fixed number. Automated flows don't count as overload because they respond to a customer action. For campaigns, one or two a week is a reasonable starting point; if unsubscribes or spam complaints rise, cut back.

Is it legal to send marketing emails in Colombia without consent?

No. Law 1581 of 2012 requires the data subject's prior, informed authorisation to process personal data, and that authorisation must be verifiable later. Ask for permission explicitly and always offer a way to unsubscribe.

How much does Klaviyo cost for a small store?

Its free plan covers up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month. Beyond those limits you move to a paid plan; its pricing page has an estimator to work out the cost for your number of contacts and sends.

What is an abandoned cart flow?

It's an automated email sequence sent when an identified customer leaves products in the cart without buying. It usually has two or three messages within the first 24 to 72 hours, with a link back to the saved cart.

Summary: what to remember

  • Five automated flows outsell the weekly newsletter: welcome, cart, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back.
  • Start with abandoned cart: in Klaviyo's 2026 data it's the flow with the highest revenue per recipient.
  • Build the list with explicit consent, as Colombia's Law 1581 requires, and measure clicks and revenue, not opens.
