AI SEO: how to rank your brand in ChatGPT and Perplexity

The new SEO isn't just Google. Get your brand ready for AI search engines.

More and more searches end in an answer written by an AI, not a list of links. The question is no longer only how to rank, but how to get cited. This guide separates what changed from what did not.

What is SEO for AI search engines?

It is optimising to be the source of an answer, not just a result in a list.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or a Google summary, the system assembles an answer from fragments of several pages and links to the ones it used. Appearing there is the new first position.

It gets called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). The name changes; the work looks a lot like SEO done properly.

How do models choose who to cite?

They cite pages that answer completely, verifiably and in an extractable way.

A paragraph that defines, gives a figure and names its source can be quoted as is. One that circles the topic for four sentences cannot. Clarity stopped being a stylistic virtue: it is a technical criterion.

Coherence counts too: if your site says one thing and your business profile another, the model prefers a source that does not contradict itself.

A model assembles the answer, but it still leans on pages somebody wrote.

How do you prepare content to get cited?

With five concrete adjustments that also improve classic SEO.

None of this requires rewriting the site. It is a matter of structure:

  • Headings that are real questions, with the answer in the first sentence.
  • Self-contained paragraphs: understandable out of context.
  • Figures with a linked source, instead of numbers with no origin.
  • FAQ markup and the entity schema that matches the page.
  • Consistent name, address, prices and hours across every surface you own.

What article structure works best?

Short answer up top, development after, questions at the end.

It is the reverse of the classic essay: conclusion first, argument second. A reader in a hurry gets what they came for in ten seconds, and a model finds a quotable block without having to interpret.

This article is built that way, and it is the structure we use for the content we produce for clients.

How do you measure visibility in AI search?

Through mentions and referral traffic, because there is no ranking to check.

Today you measure by asking: run your own queries in AI tools to see whether you get cited, plus the referral traffic arriving from them in analytics. It is imperfect, but it is what exists.

What has not changed: if your page does not answer well, nobody will cite it.

How does GEO differ from traditional SEO?

The unit of visibility and the answer format change; the fundamentals do not.

Summed up in a table:

GoalPosition in the listBeing cited in the answer
UnitThe pageThe self-contained paragraph
Key signalRelevance and linksClarity, figures and coherence
MetricPosition and impressionsMentions and referral traffic

Frequently asked questions

Has traditional SEO stopped mattering?

No. AI search leans on the web index: if your page is not indexed or loads badly, it does not get cited either. GEO adds to SEO rather than replacing it.

Can I block the models and still appear?

If you block a system's crawler, you lose the chance of being cited by it. It is a business decision: some brands prefer to protect their content and accept that loss of visibility.

Should I write different content for ChatGPT?

Separate content is not needed. Writing the same content better is: answers first, figures with sources, and clear structure serve both audiences.

Does structured data help me get cited?

It helps the page be understood unambiguously — what it is, whose it is, at what price — which supports both rich results and extraction by models.

How much traffic comes from AI search today?

It depends on the sector and it is growing fast. Check it in your own analytics as a referral source: that is the only figure that matters for your case, and market averages will tell you little.

Summary: what to remember

  • The new unit of visibility is the quotable paragraph, not the ranking position.
  • Question-shaped headings, the answer in the first sentence, and figures with a source.
  • Measure mentions and referral traffic: there is no ranking to check.
