Local SEO for SMEs in Medellín: 2026 guide

Show up in searches from your city and attract customers right around the corner.

Shop owner serving a customer at the counter of a local business.

A business with an address does not compete against the whole internet: it competes against the five that show up on the map when somebody searches nearby. This guide explains how to get on that list and stay there.

What is local SEO and how does it differ from regular SEO?

Local SEO decides who appears on the map; classic SEO decides who appears in the blue list.

They are two competitions with different rules. Local search weighs the business profile, the user's distance and reputation; organic search weighs content and links.

A neighbourhood business can lose the organic fight against a national portal and still win every search in its own area.

How do you optimise a Google Business Profile?

Fill the profile completely and keep it alive: it is the most profitable local asset there is.

The profile is what shows on the map, what carries the opening hours, and what receives the reviews. This is what we check in every audit:

  • The right primary category, and secondary ones only when they truly apply.
  • Name, address and phone identical to the site's, down to the punctuation.
  • Hours kept current, holidays included: a wrong opening time costs a visit.
  • Your own photos of the place, the team and the product — not stock images.
  • Products and services loaded with their descriptions, which also get indexed.

Local search happens on a phone, a few metres from the business.

How much do reviews weigh in local rankings?

Twice over: they influence map order and they decide who gets called among the top three.

It is not about a perfect five stars but about recent reviews, arriving steadily and answered. A business at 4.6 replying to every comment reads better than one at 5.0 with three reviews from two years ago.

Ask for the review while the customer is happy, and never buy any: bought reviews get detected and can cost the profile.

What content helps you rank in one city?

Content naming the neighbourhood, the errand and the landmark people actually use.

One page per area or service written in real language — the district name, the avenue, the landmark — beats a generic text repeated with the city swapped out.

If you serve several parts of the city, each deserves a page when you have something different to say about it. If you do not, do not create it.

Are directories and local citations worth it?

They help when they are consistent and hurt when each one says something different.

The value is not in appearing in fifty directories but in every existing listing showing exactly the same name, address and phone. Inconsistencies confuse the engine and dilute the signal.

How do you measure whether local SEO is working?

By profile actions — calls, directions and clicks to the site — not by position alone.

The profile dashboard shows how many people asked for directions and how many called. That is the business metric; ranking is only the means to it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a physical address to do local SEO?

You need a verifiable service area. Google allows service-area businesses without a storefront, but requires verification and coherence between the area you declare and the one you actually serve.

How many reviews do I need to compete?

Fewer than you think: consistency matters more than the total. A steady flow of new, answered reviews usually beats a competitor with more reviews that are all old.

Can I rank in several cities at once?

Yes, with one page per city and real content for each. Duplicating the same text with the city name swapped rarely works and can be treated as low-quality content.

What if a competitor has fake reviews?

Report them from the profile with whatever evidence you have. Meanwhile the best defence is accumulating your own reviews and answering all of them: the person deciding reads that too.

Does local SEO work for professional services?

Yes. Clinics, workshops, lawyers and accountants compete for searches with immediate intent. There the profile, the hours and how easy you are to reach weigh as much as the site.

Summary: what to remember

  • The Google Business Profile is the most profitable local asset: complete it and keep it alive.
  • Recent, answered reviews are worth more than a perfect score with three old opinions.
  • Measure calls and direction requests, not just map position.
